REDEFINING WHAT THE AFRICAN WOMAN IN SPORTS LOOKS LIKE
Wanamke is a non-profit organization created to inspire, educate and transform African women and girls passionate about sports by empowering them with resources, skills and opportunities to realise their full potential and be financially independent. Through their encounter with Wanamke, they will be able to grow businesses and careers that contribute to their personal, social and economic growth.
Wanamke was derived from a Swahili word – MWANAMKE, which means woman. Our focus will solely be on women and girls. We want to spark a revolution which will change the face of sports, its careers and businesses. Through mentoring, training and funding, we can inspire and give opportunities to those who are passionate but not currently aren’t engaged in the sports sector
FOUNDED BY MOYO OGUNSEINDE
Moyo is the founder of Upbeat Recreational Centre, Chairperson of Lagos Gymnastics, Association and Board Member, Lagos Sports Trust Fund. She is an unconventional sports lover passionate about making a difference. In her dynamic sports roles, she encountered women whose sports careers were short-lived and women passionate about sports but financially disempowered due to lack of skills, knowledge and resources. So she made up her mind to change this and build a life where women who love sports can explore alternate sports careers and businesses and gain financial independence in the process, which led to the creation of Wanamke.
The non-profit organisation was born out of her desire to give back to the female community of sports lovers, and she now runs programs to help African women and girls who have dreams of working in sports but lack resources to make this dream a reality.
WHAT WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH
Toward the fulfilment of SDGs 5, 8 and 10, our goal is to economically empower African women in sports through programmes that deliver life-changing experiences, where women and girls are inspired, educated and transformed. Wanamke’s mission will transcend Africa and touch women and girls of African descent across the world.
